Installation and Upgrades

Hey! Try out our new documentation pages, hope you like it!

Before we begin, we must stress that making backups before installing/updating any WordPress plugins or WordPress itself is highly recommended.

WordPress makes installing and updating plugins very easy. In case you are not familiar with installing/updating plugins (as explained on wordpress), here are a few ways:

Events Manager Installation

There are three ways you can install Events Manager.

Automatic Install via WordPress (Recommended)

  1. Go to your admin page and go to Plugins > Add New
  2. Search for ‘events manager’
  3. Find Events Manager and click install
  4. Add your FTP details if requested and let the plugin install
  5. Activate it from the installation page or your Plugins page

Adding via Zip file

  1. Download Events Manager
  2. Go to Plugins > Add New in your admin area
  3. Click Upload
  4. Choose the zip file you just uploaded and click Install Now
  5. Add your FTP details if required, install
  6. Activate it from the installation page or your Plugins page

Uploading via FTP

  1. Download Events Manager
  2. Connect to your blog via FTP
  3. Extract the zip file you downloaded, and upload the events-manager folder to your wp-content/plugins folder
  4. Visit your Plugins page in the admin area.
  5. Activate the plugin

Updating Events Manager

The best way to update is via the WordPress automatic updater. It will automatically inform you of new updates and will install them for you after confirmation.

However, if this isn’t possible, you can do it the same way as adding via zip file. Bear in mind that you should deactivate and delete the plugin before replacing it with the new one.  No events or settings are deleted in this process (the only time events are deleted is if you click uninstall, and even then you must confirm again before anything gets deleted by EM). Once uploaded reactivate and the update should happen in the background.

Again, remember to back up your database before updating and installing plugins! This is something you should do for any upgrades you make, including (if not especially) the WordPress core.

Pro Installation

Since Pro is an add-on to Events Manager, you must install Events Manager beforehand.

  1. Download Events Manager Pro
  2. Go to Plugins > Add New in your admin area
  3. Click Upload
  4. Choose the zip file you just downloaded and click Install Now
  5. Add your FTP details if required, install
  6. Activate it from the installation page or your Plugins page
  7. Visit the Events > Settings page and click on the Licenses tab, then click the ‘Activate’ button for Events Manager Pro.
  8. Once activated, you should see some new options within the Events menu, such as Forms Editor and/or Gateways

You can update three ways:

  1. Enter your license key for our auto-update feature. Then just update via your admin menu with the WordPress automatic updater.
  2. Do as you would install, but deactivate and delete the plugin before installing the new one. No events or settings are deleted in this process.
  3. Deactivate the plugin, replace it with the new version via FTP, and reactivate.

Activating your Pro license

Once installed for the first time, you will be asked to activate your Pro license to make Pro features available. This step is required whether or not you still have access to pro updates and support.

You will see an admin notice asking you to activate your plugin license. Click on this and you will be redirected to our site, where you will need to log in (if not already logged in) and confirm the activation of a license on your site.

You can also view and manage your licenses from within your WordPress Dashboard > Events > Settings > Licenses tab or from our account licenses page.

Getting Started / Troubleshooting

Once you’ve installed Events Manager, it’s time to start adding events! We strongly recommend you check out the getting started guide and our documentation section.

If you run into problems with either Events Manager or Events Manager Pro there are various places to find help:

This page is only a small portion of the event documentation which is here for quick reference. If you’re just starting out, we recommend you visit the following places for further support:

  1. Browse the other documentation pages and tutorials. Many questions we answer are already there.
  2. View the FAQ for general questions and Troubleshooting for common issues. These are regularly updated with recently common issues users may be experiencing.
  3. Rather than trying to contact us directly, we request you use the support forums as others may be experiencing the same issues as you. Pro users should use the pro forums for faster support.
